The outstretched arm of the Lord…….his mighty hand.

I recall swimming in the ocean as a child. The waves were high, at least they were for me; my father was standing next to me. One particularly large wave crashed over me and forced me under water; for a moment I thought I would drown. But then I felt something pulling me up out of the water. It was my father’s hands that had grabbed hold of me.

Deuteronomy 26:8 (NIV)

So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders.

Who can say whether I would have survived that wave had my father not been at my side. Unlike me, my father was strong enough to fight the power of the wave and to pull me out of its grasp. He had the physical strength in his arms and hands to stretch out and grab me.

When you wake from sleeping and climb out of bed, you stretch your body. You raise your arms high above you and outward to loosen the muscles that have been in a still position for a long time. It feels good to stretch.

But if you’ve kept your arm in an outstretched position for an extended period of time, you know how painful that can be. Your muscles get tired and grow weak; after a while they began to shake, then they begin to cramp.

The outstretched arm of the Lord…….his mighty hand. These are the tools that God uses to save his people. It is a great image: a loving father saving his children from harm.

Your Heavenly Father’s arms have been outstretched since the beginning of man  ……… and they never grow tired. He never gets weary at saving his children.

My mug is full and steamy. Here’s to another day, another chance to see what God’s mighty hand and his outstretched will do.
