Matthew 6:21 (NIV)

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Well……. it’s finally here ………….. Valentines Day. Some of you are looking forward to a night out with your loved ones. Others are wishing this day could be wiped off the calendar for good. I guess I’m somewhere in the middle. It’s not that I mind a day that emphasizes love, it’s just, well ………… it doesn’t emphasize love. Like so many of our holidays, it has become too commercialized. The focus has been shifted away from the value of the relationship and towards the dollar signs spent on the object of our affections. In other words, society is led us to believe that the more you spend, the more you love. Yeah …………..

Has love been reduced to a four letter word that means little more than sex and bribery?

Emphatically NO!!!

The world can distort the meaning as much as it wants but true love still exists and it has nothing to do with chocolates and flowers. It means much, much more than that.

Love has to do with treasure. The things that you treasure the most are the things you love. The word treasure comes from the Greek word thesauros which is where we get the name for a book thesaurus – a collection of words with related concepts. Originally, the word was used to describe a storehouse, a place where valuables were kept.

Interestingly enough, if you read my blog from yesterday, it comes from the same Greek root word, tithémi, where we get the word sacrifice. Hmmmm………. there may be a connection here ………

So, Bill, what you’re saying is – the greatest expression of love is to treasure someone so much that you are willing to sacrifice whatever is necessary to promote and achieve their greatest welfare. Is that what you’re saying? Pretty much ………

When you love someone deeply enough, you want to give them good things. You want to make them happy, you want to sacrifice yourself for their well-being.

That is the true definition of love ………..

Mugs Up! Hope you have a Happy Valentines Day filled with the true definition of love.
